Story SynopsesIn Magic of the Rose, a crippled young mage named Root finds forbidden love and becomes involved in a series of murders that could bring down a kingdom. Forced to take on the disguise of a warrior, Root survives a torturous training regimen only to be brought face to face with the murderous demon he has been sent to find. In Writing on Water, a privileged young man is responsible for the death of his beloved tutor. The young man, Pochan by name, is part of a sailing expedition to a land being plundered of its magical resources: flowers useful for their potency in military magic. It is a clash of cultures tale, with a theme of looking beyond culture to find the truth. In The Cloud Minders, a young acolyte is entrapped in the mind of a creature addicted to sensation by its contact with the minds of men. Through this cloud-like being, the acolyte learns the true nature and origin of his religion. In The Expedition, a young scribe named Yasu joins a group of explorers lead by an experienced traveler, a man who believes that the wealth in any adventure lies in publishing the tale. Yasu soon learns that true wealth may come from surviving the journey. Wards of Magic tells the tale of Rahmah. In order to save her son, a woman must turn her back on those who have given aid, betray their trust, and steal a city’s only hope. Will she also play a part in the extinction of magic from the world? The Light at the End of the World. Our culture provides us with a sense of identity and of being grounded in the world. It also sets us in opposition to those who may have quite different values and beliefs. In the end, the light we see and cling to may be the destroyer of worlds. In A Blue Wave Rises, a blind young Canaanite living 1,350 years Before the Common Era is able to see through the eyes of others, including those in the future, be it a day or three thousand years hence. Employed for this skill to guide a treasure boat past pirates and storms, he has begun to have an unbidden vision. It draws him on with the promise of gaining true sight. The closer he comes to his goal, however, the more it seems the price of his sight will be the lives of all else onboard.
